Professor Ina Wagner is a leading European academic in the field of work and technology. She is Chair of the Institute of Technology Assessment & Design, Vienna University of Technology (TUW), where she has built up a unique interdisciplinary research unit (within a traditional computer science faculty), bringing together expertise in sociology, ethnography, psychology, and computer science for the study of work practices and organisations, as well as the design of supporting technologies. Ina Wagner’s scientific career has been based on interdisciplinarity from the outset. Her major intellectual project is to achieve a deeper understanding of (collaborative) work practices and technology use in fields as varied as health care, architecture and urban planning, and other professional contexts.

Research Interests: 

Ina Wagner has attracted funding from a diversity of national, international (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), German Ministry of Infrastructure) and EU sources with a project volume of 2,2 Million Euros in the last 10 years. Her engagement in research ‘bringing ethnography to design’ started with ESPRIT LTR Project DESARTE (The computer-supported design of artefacts and spaces in architecture: landscape architecture), for which she acted as a coordinator. This research was continued within IST-2001-33064 ATELIER (Architecture and Technologies for Inspirational Learning Environments, 2001-2004) and, more recently, within IST 27571 IPCity (Integrated Project on Presence and Interaction in Mixed Reality, 2006-2010), in both of which she is PI for the Austrian team. As part of these projects she addresses key issues of design practice. Among her main interests are the use of creative design methods on the one hand, understanding how designers manage complex interdependencies on the other hand. As part of this she has studied ‘ordering system’ in architectural practice as well as the role materiality can have in cooperative work, exploring the ways in which it also provides resources for persuasive, narrative and experiential interactions.
